Messy Faith

A Devotion by Heather C. King

Sometimes I think Pinterest needs a glossary because I keep choosing projects that say, “Easy,” “Simple,” and “For beginner,” and they all turn out to be harder, longer, and more frustrating than they sound. We have a way of doing that to each other, too, acting like faith is “easy” and “simple” when sometimes faith is hard. We say, “just believe,” “just trust,” “just hold on to the promises,” “just wait on Him,” “just keep praying….” “Just,” that’s how we oversimplify when really it’s desperately difficult. Rather than wade in waste-deep to the muck and mire of messy faith, we stand on the shore and shout out pat phrases and cliches like ineffective life preservers.  The truth is: Some days we’ll mess up.  Sometimes God’s provision is hard to see.  Sometimes God seems silent.  Some days you want to give up on your calling because you just can’t see the results.  This isn’t “Simple,” “5 Easy Steps,” “Just” faith. This is real life faith.  This is when all we can do is bring it to Jesus because we don’t even know where else to go.  The good news is: that is enough.

Devotional Scriptures:

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24 NIV).

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken (Psalm 55:22 NIV)

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7 NIV).
